Applicant FAQs

What should I wear?

There are many great things about living in San Francisco, and one of them is how casual we are! We invite you to come to your virtual interview in business casual attire. We're hoping you can be comfortable and really enjoy your day with us, so feel free to skip the suit and/or tie if that feels right to you. Business casual is how most of us dress for work (if we aren't wearing scrubs!), so we will be right there with you. To be more specific, think button up shirts, blouses, or a sweater. This being said, if you like the routine of wearing your suit, go for it! We want you to learn about UCSF Pediatrics however feels most comfortable - no need to stress about what to wear.

Am I interviewing for the JMP and UCSF on my interview day?

What time zone should I be using?

All the times on your agenda are Pacific Time. Here’s a handy online time conversion website. If your location makes our time zones unworkable, please let us know and we will work with you to figure something out.

For other FAQs, please see the JMP’s website!

ZOOM FAQs

What’s your advice on setting up technology?

There are some great tip sheets available that will talk you through this. We like this one from the AAMC.

In general, we recommend finding a quiet place with a strong internet connection. Your medical school may offer spaces for interviewing. We are happy to test your internet connection ahead of time with you - just reach out to Rex if you’d like to do that.

On your applicant day, Rex will also keep an open zoom connection open if you want to test your connection before your interview starts.

What if my kid/pet/parent walks through the room in the middle of the interview?

It happens to all of us! Don’t worry - you may see your interviewer’s kids/pets/family members doing the same!

What kind of background should I use?

We encourage you to use a plain background. Virtual backgrounds are OK too if they work for you.

How will I know what zoom links to use?

Each applicant will get a personalized schedule a few days prior to your interview day. The schedule will have all the zoom links you need to get through your day! And you can always contact Rex Dacanay (rex.dacanay@ucsf.edu) if you are confused or need help!

What if my interviewer doesn’t show up?

We have a whole team of people who are available to offer tech support on your interview day. If your interviewer does not show up within 5 minutes of your interview start time, please email Rex Dacanay (rex.dacanay@ucsf.edu) or text him; his phone number will be on your applicant agenda.
